“I take it you’re feeling better,” he says, as we make our way home. “You’re certainly not whinging so much.”

“Honestly, it’s like magic. Well, I guess it sort of is. Everything feels back to normal. If you could find a way to bottle this, you’d make a fortune.”

“Well, I’m very pleased for you. And how was the run itself? Did you come across anything interesting?”

“Not really, just an old, derelict house. Other than that, just trees and more trees.”

“It wouldn’t be eastern Europe, would it, if there weren’t some creepy, abandoned places about. Anyway, I was thinking, as we’ve got yesterday’s earnings and you must be starving after such a long run, how about lunch at one of the restaurants by the river?”

“Really, isn’t that a bit extravagant? Aren’t we meant to be watching every penny, never mind lying low?”

“Well, now you mention it, you’re right. Back for sandwiches, it is! What was I thinking?”

“No!” I grab his arm and pull him around. “I want nice food! You can’t take it back now!”

We laugh together, then his smile drops.

“What is it?” I say, still holding onto his arm. “What’s wrong?”

His eyes meet mine and there’s the slightest of frowns on his face.

“Nothing. That’s what is so strange. Right now, nothing feels wrong at all.”

I gently release his arm.

“Actually, I think I’ve changed my mind. Let’s just go for an ice-cream, instead.”
